Louis Byrd III is a professional photojournalist providing editorial, promotional, public relations, event and entertainment photography for a wide range of businesses, publications and organizations. Currently serving as Photo Editor and principal photographer for Cachet Magazine, Louis’ work has appeared in several publications including: Jet Magazine, N’digo Magapaper, Streetwise newspaper, Midwest Gap Magazine, Citizen newspapers and the Chicago Defender.
He has also done promotional and public relations work for: WGCI-AM/FM, WMAQ-TV, Athletes Against Drugs, the March of Dimes Defects Foundation, 100 Black Men, Burrell Communications Group, Flowers Communications Group, R.J. Dale Advertising and Public Relations and E. Morris Communications Inc.
Louis’ interest in photography was sparked by the fascinating photo essays he saw in Life and Look magazine as a high school freshman and developed a passion for “telling the story with pictures.” That passion extended into radio and television journalism for a short time.
However there was one event that sparked a renewed interest and commitment to still photography and that was attending the Million Man March and seeing the media distortion that took place afterwards. “I couldn’t believe the stories and images that the mainstream media was sending out, our story wasn’t being told right,” Louis said. “If the story of the African American community is going to be told right, we (African Americans) are going to have to do it ourselves.”
A graduate of Columbia College Chicago, Louis received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Broadcast Communications/Television.
Louis is currently President of the Chicago Association of Black Journalists and is an active member of both the National Association of Black Journalists and the Chicago Alliance of African American Photographers. He is single and lives on Chicago’s South side.
